Bolognese Artist (c.1600)

Head of an old Man

Oil on paper, laid on canvas, mounted as a drawing; 28.7 x 20.9 cm

Prov: H.D. Molesworth

Purchased, 1955; WA1955.31

Formerly attributed to Beccafumi, this oil-sketch may be a study for the figure of a prophet or saint such as St Joseph in a Holy Family. A similar expressive head in oil on paper from the same model (and with the same provenance) was on the art market in 1979.
